Introducing James Brockwell: Senior Underwriter at Westcor

Westcor is pleased to welcome James Brockwell as a Senior Underwriter, bringing with him a decade of experience, a sharp eye for problem-solving, and an entrepreneurial flair that aligns seamlessly with Westcor’s dynamic and forward-thinking approach to underwriting.

James’s path into insurance may not have been traditional, his original university plans were in automotive design, but like many in the sector, he found himself drawn to the industry by chance and quickly discovered a passion for it. Starting out in 2015 as a clerical assistant, James rose rapidly through the ranks, progressing to a junior residential continued use underwriter before shifting toward the commercial market.

His journey then took him through a mix of consultancy and full-time underwriting roles, including several years at Aviva, where he further honed his technical expertise.

Creativity in the complex

At Westcor, James is embracing a dual focus, underwriting core title risks and supporting lender products, while stepping into a company he long admired for its evolution. “The direction Westcor has taken, its position in the market, its focus on complex risks, really resonates with me.”

This reflects James’s pragmatic approach to the industry. He’s not only seeking professional growth but also driven by the opportunity to bring creative solutions to underwriting’s toughest challenges. “I’m a naturally creative person, both in and out of work,” he explains. “So to apply that mindset to problem-solving in a space like this is a perfect match.”

Looking ahead

James’s ambitions at Westcor include developing deeper relationships within the market and eventually taking the lead on new underwriting initiatives. “There’s huge potential here to expand into untapped products and markets. I’d love to help spearhead one of those future projects.”

Niche insurance brings unique opportunities to educate stakeholders and innovate within tight parameters; a challenge James embraces. He sees Westcor as the ideal environment to push boundaries and drive change. “The company gives you room to grow, to try something new. That’s exactly what I was looking for.”

With a passion for innovation and a strong technical foundation, James brings a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the Westcor team. We’re excited to see how he’ll shape future initiatives and contribute to the firm’s continued success.

When a boundary dispute becomes a total loss

Boundary discrepancies can often be dismissed as minor or technical issues; e.g. a fence line moves slightly when replaced, a garden shed marginally overlaps the title boundary, a historical assumption over ownership and evolved deeds. However, in practice, they represent one of the clearest examples of how title ambiguities can escalate into significant financial and legal risk for homeowners, lenders and purchasers.

Across bridging, specialist buy-to-let and commercial and unregulated lending, activity remained resilient, loan books continued to grow and competition intensified, even as lenders stayed disciplined on risk and pricing.
